- It is not recommended to take the High Speed Rail (HSR) from TRA Sanyi Station to Taichung Airport (RMQ). HSR is expensive, slow, involves transfer hassles, and has difficult taxi access. Although there can be up to 30 trains from Miaoli to Taichung a day, running from the first at 07:13 to the last at 23:43, once service ends for the night until early morning, alternative transportation is still required. Assuming you depart from TRA Sanyi Station (Sanyi Township, Miaoli County) and head to the nearest Miaoli HSR station, a taxi ride would cost about NT$900 and take approximately 37 minutes. After arriving at the HSR station, the time to walk in, purchase tickets, and wait on the platform is about 15 minutes. Then, take a 16-18-minute (17 min on average) HSR ride from Miaoli Station to Taichung HSR Station. The ticket price is NT$270 per person, followed by a 10-minute walk to exit the station, wait for a ride at the taxi stand, and after a trip of about 31 minutes with a fare of NT$900, you will arrive at your destination at Taichung Airport (RMQ) (Shalu District, Taichung City). The entire journey, including transfers, takes a total of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Assuming one person traveling alone, the total transportation cost is NT$2,070. However, in Miaoli County, there are only just over 400 licensed taxis. The taxi density is 0.5% of that in the Taipei/New Taipei metro area. In other words, hailing a taxi on the spot is 200 times more difficult than in a major city like Taipei. Even if you are lucky enough to hail a cab, a minority of taxi drivers in Miaoli County may not use the meter, and might overcharge or take detours, especially with passengers who appear to be from out of town. If you’re not familiar with local pricing, you are an easy target. To avoid getting ripped off, it is strongly advised to book online in advance. Although a metered taxi from central TRA Sanyi Station to central Taichung Airport (RMQ) might be cheaper, you still face the risk of not being able to find a cab—or ending up with a driver who refuses to use the meter.
